The week began with an earthquake and will close with a hurricane.  An earthquake and a hurricane in the same week?  Well, it's a bit surreal isn't it?

Today at at Lowe's (where we went to procure a tarp in case, you know, our roof breaks open, or a window blows out) as people stripped the shelves of D batteries and waited for the Lowe's folks to unload the latest shipment of Styrofoam coolers, they were still talking about Tuesday's earthquake.  This week at least, anyone you meet, you instantly share these twin experiences and it brings people together somehow.  And hokey to say, perhaps, but it's nice.

We are as ready as can be for Irene.  The frustrating thing about hurricanes and I've been through my fair share (three years in South Florida will do that for a girl), is the waiting and not knowing.  It's like getting ready for a house guest you don't particularly want to entertain; a mercurial, blustery house guest who might be sweet as a slice of coconut cake, or nasty and throwing tantrums.  You try to prepare for every possible thing, not knowing if it's too much or not enough.  You don't really know how it's going to be until they arrive.

And so it goes.

The journal page above is an oldie-but-goodie from 2008, created during Tropical Storm Hanna.  Mr. P was away and the storm wasn't so bad, but the weather people kept droning on about "the center of circulation" and that phrase ended up in the spread.  The found text reads "This was so unlike her/so entirely different/from any conduct previously noticed/she alone knew why."

Mr. P, Harvey, and I have battened down the hatches, here in Virginia.  Sending good wishes to my friends in Irene's path.  May you all stay safe, sound, and not be too long without the comforts of routine and electricity.
